Endogenous opiates and behavioral responses to environmental novelty.

چکیده
Endogenous opiates (endorphins) mediate a variety of motivational and behavioral states. We examined the possible contributions of endorphins to the exploratory behavior of mice. Naloxone, ablocker of opiate receptors, depressed hole board exploratory activity and entry into a novel environment. It also reduced responding for sensory stimulation. Finally, a direct correlation w a s demonstrated between exploratory behavior on the one hand, and enkephalininduced behavioral activation on the other.

ENDOGENOUS RELEASE OF OPIATES BY REPETITIVE ELECTRICAL FIELD STIMULATION IN THE GUINEA-PIG AND RAT ILEAL LONGITUDINAL MUSCLE
The effect of repetitive electrical field stimulation and the response of the guinea-pig and rat ileal longitudinal muscle to single pulse stimulations was examined. Single pulse field stimulation produced twitch contraction which was inhibited by repetitive field stimulation (10 Hz, 40V, 0.5 msec for 5 m). This inhibition was largely, though never completely, reversed by naloxone. Contrac...
متن کاملExploration as a functional correlate of endorphins.
Low doses of opiate drugs are known to produce behavioral excitation in many species (Kreuger, Eddy & Sumwalt; 1941). In rodents this activation response generally includes increased rearing and ambulation (Fog, 1970; Norton, 1977). We wish to call attention to a novel interpretation of previous findings, i.e. that the activation due to opiates reflects exploration, and that this might imply th...
متن کاملResponses of endogenous proline in rice seedlings under chromium exposure
Hydroponic experiments were performed to exam the dynamic change of endogenous proline in rice seedlings exposed to potassium chromate chromium (VI) or chromium nitrate chromium (III). Although accumulation of both chromium species in rice seedlings was obvious, more chromium was detected in plant tissues of rice seedlings exposed to chromium (III) than those in chromium (VI), majority being in...
متن کاملTHE ROLE OF NON-ADRENERGIC NON-CHOLINERGIC SYSTEM IN THE PERISTALTIC REFLEX OF GUINE A PIG ILEUM
The effect of some endogenous components -endogenous opiates, cholecystokinin (CCK), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and somatostatin-as inhibitory or excitatory transmitters in the local nervous pathways involved in peristaltic responses was examined. The peristaltic reflex was studied using a modification of the Trendelenberg preparation. In each preparation, the luminal distens...
متن کاملEndogenous opiate peptides, stress reactivity, and risk for hypertension.
Endogenous opiate peptides can regulate neuroendocrine and circulatory responses to behavioral stress and may be important in the pathogenic effects of sympathoadrenal reactivity. We tested this hypothesis by examining the effect of the opiate antagonist naloxone on blood pressure responses to behavioral stress in young adults with high, medium, or low casual blood pressures. Naloxone increased...
